Smithy Beck settlement: Latterbarrow longhouse 860m north west of Low Gillerthwaite

This challenging walk involves a vertical ascent of over 800m so will test the stamina of most walkers. But it's well worth the effort because few places in the Lake District have views that can compete with those offered from the Pillar summit.

This walk passes through the hills & woodlands on the eastern side of Crummock Water. The route is dominated by two sweeping views: the famous vista of the Buttermere fells, and the dramatic rocky buttress of Grasmoor End looming over its northern tip.
